DOLE is an audiovisual essay based on observations of communities living in the Carpathian Mountains by photographer Lucia Nimcová and sound artist David Petráš. What is contemporary folklore? And what does it sound like? Is it still possible to keep its character alive? The authors search for these answers in the border areas of Slovakia, Ukraine, Poland, and Romania. The soundscape is based mainly on the disappearing language of the Rusyn and Hutsul minorities and the sounds of their everyday life. Through a collage of field recordings, photos, and texts, we learn about the personal experiences of the characters and their relationship to the places they live in.
